Upload leads, companies, or local businesses with a CSV

Use CSV upload when you already have data outside Artisan and want to bring it into your workspace. After uploading a CSV, you can use it in one of two ways:
  • Use it for a campaign: add reachable records to a campaign, or use a company list to find people first.
  • Save it as a list and enrich it: create a list in Artisan, enrich the records, and use the data later for targeting, segmentation, or personalization.
CSV upload supports three data types: People, Companies, and Local businesses.

Which CSV type should I choose?

CSV typeUse it when…Can it go directly into a campaign?Minimum required field
PeopleYou already have specific B2B contacts you want Ava to reach.YesEmail address or LinkedIn URL
CompaniesYou have target accounts, but still need to find the right people at those companies.No. First find people at those companies.Website or LinkedIn URL
Local businessesYou have local businesses Ava should contact directly.YesWebsite

Option 1: Use a CSV for a campaign

People CSVs

People CSVs can be added directly to campaigns because each row is a person Ava can contact. To import people accurately, include at least one of:
  • Email address
  • LinkedIn URL
You can also include fields like first name, last name, company, job title, phone number, industry, location, or any custom context you want Ava to use.

Local business CSVs

Local business CSVs can also be added directly to campaigns because each row is a business Ava can contact. To import local businesses accurately, include at least:
  • Website
You can also include fields like business name, category, location, phone number, rating, or notes.

Company CSVs

Company CSVs cannot be added directly to campaigns because Ava needs people to contact, not just company records. Instead, use a Company CSV to build an account list, then find people at those companies:
  1. Upload your Company CSV.
  2. Save it as a list.
  3. Go to Find leads.
  4. Use the company list as your target account list.
  5. Add people filters, such as job title, management level, department, or location.
  6. Save the matching people to a list or add them to a campaign.
For example, you can upload a list of target company websites, then find VPs of Sales, Heads of Marketing, or Finance leaders at those companies using Artisan’s B2B data.

Option 2: Save a CSV as a list and enrich it

Any CSV type can be saved as a list in Artisan. Use this when you want to import data first, enrich it, review it, or use it later. Examples:
  • Upload a People CSV, enrich missing fields, then add the people to a campaign.
  • Upload a Company CSV, enrich company data, then use it to find contacts at those companies.
  • Upload a Local business CSV, enrich business details, then use the list in a campaign.
Saving as a list is useful when you want to clean, enrich, or segment the data before using it in outreach.

Map your CSV properties

After uploading your CSV, Artisan asks you to map your columns to Artisan fields. For example:
  • Email → Email address
  • LinkedIn → LinkedIn URL
  • Website → Website
  • Company → Company name
  • Job title → Job title
  • Phone → Phone number
Mapping tells Artisan what each column means so records are imported correctly.

Use custom columns for personalization in campaigns

You can add extra columns to your CSV beyond the required fields. For example:
  • Territory
  • Segment
  • Account owner
  • Product interest
  • Event attended
  • Customer tier
  • Notes from your team
  • Any custom qualification or targeting data
After import, these fields can appear in Messaging → Personalizations. You can decide which fields Ava should use when writing messages. This is useful when your CSV contains context that should influence personalization but is not part of Artisan’s default fields.

Campaign compatibility

A campaign can only use one lead source type. You can add multiple CSVs of the same type to a campaign. For example:
  • Multiple People CSVs in one B2B campaign
  • Multiple Local business CSVs in one local business campaign
You cannot mix People CSVs and Local business CSVs in the same campaign. Company CSVs are not added directly to campaigns. They are used to create company lists, enrich companies, or find people at those companies.

Best practices

  • Choose People if each row is a contact Ava can reach directly.
  • Choose Companies if each row is an account and you still need to find people at those accounts.
  • Choose Local businesses if each row is a business Ava can contact directly.
  • Use the minimum required identifier for the CSV type you choose.
  • Add custom columns when they will help Ava personalize messages.
  • Save the CSV as a list if you want to enrich or review it before using it.
  • Do not mix B2B People CSVs and Local business CSVs in the same campaign.
